Caterpillar built the 312 across several generations, from the 312B and 312C through the 312D, 312D2 and 312E, ending with the 312F GC. Net power moved from around 63 kW (84 hp) on the 312B to 70 to 71 kW (94 to 95 hp) on the later 312E and 312F GC, with operating weight generally between 12,500 kg and 14,150 kg depending on generation and undercarriage length. Emissions compliance also moved by generation, from EEC 80/1269 on the earliest machines up to EU Stage IIIB and Tier 4 Final on the last 312-badged models.
