The Caterpillar 312 is a 12 to 14 tonne class crawler excavator, sitting in the small-to-mid excavator range between the compact 30x series and the larger 320 class. Caterpillar built the 312 across several generations, from the 312B and 312C through the 312D, 312D2 and 312E, ending with the 312F GC. Net power moved from around 63 kW (84 hp) on the 312B to 70 to 71 kW (94 to 95 hp) on the later 312E and 312F GC, with operating weight generally between 12,500 kg and 14,150 kg depending on generation and undercarriage length.
