Buying guide

Crawler excavators

Tracked excavators from roughly 10 to 50-plus tonnes, built for earthmoving, quarrying, demolition prep and mass excavation. Configuration and undercarriage choice matter as much as size. Compare the class below, then weigh the live stock by make, hours and price.

Choosing the right type

Standard vs long-reach frontStandard fronts balance dig depth and breakout force; long-reach booms and sticks trade force for reach on drainage, canal work and demolition setback.
Monoboom vs two-piece boomA monoboom is simpler and stronger for straight digging; a two-piece boom adds an extra pivot for working around obstacles and closer to the machine.
Standard vs LC undercarriageLC (long carriage) undercarriage widens the track base for stability on soft ground and heavier attachments; standard carriage suits firmer sites and easier transport width.
Bucket and quick-coupler setupA hydraulic quick coupler lets one machine swap digging, grading and demolition buckets fast; a pin-on bucket is simpler but fixed to one job.
Weight class10 to 20 t suits general earthmoving and utilities, 20 to 35 t covers mainline groundworks and quarrying, 35 t and up handles mass excavation and heavy demolition.

What to check before buying

Undercarriage wearMeasure track, sprocket and roller wear as a percentage remaining; a worn undercarriage on a large machine is a major replacement cost.
Slew ring playCheck for play or noise in the slew bearing under load; excess movement points to a worn ring and an expensive repair.
Hydraulic conditionLook for leaks at rams, hoses and swivel joints, and confirm cylinder response and pump performance stay smooth under full load.
Boom and stick pins and bushesInspect pins and bushes at every boom, stick and bucket joint for slop; loose linkages signal heavy use and near-term rebuild cost.

Common questions

What size crawler excavator do I need?

10 to 20 t covers general earthmoving and utility trenching, 20 to 35 t suits mainline groundworks and quarry loading, and 35 t plus is for mass excavation or heavy demolition where reach and breakout force matter most.

Standard or LC undercarriage?

LC (long carriage) gives a wider, more stable base for soft ground, long-reach fronts and heavy attachments. Standard carriage is narrower, easier to transport and suits firmer working surfaces.

How do I judge hours against application?

Match hours to how the machine worked: quarry and demolition duty wears undercarriage and hydraulics faster than light grading. Weigh hours alongside undercarriage condition and service history, not as a number alone.

Is a long-reach front worth it?

Only if the job needs it. Long-reach booms and sticks extend reach and depth for drainage, canal work or safe-setback demolition, but reduce breakout force compared with a standard front of the same weight class.
